Civic Duty

Yesterday, December 1, 2011 Republican presidential hopeful, Newt Gingrich, said that Americans will have to do more for themselves if they want the government to do less. Do Americans really want the government to “do less” or listen more to the public’s opinion and to what extent are we held accountable for the nation’s economic and social problems. Our civic duty is to serve when called to jury duty, pay taxes, be a law abiding citizen and a good example, and our most important civic duty is to vote for the candidate we feel can best fill government positions and serve the people. The weight of being well-informed and voting for the best candidate is on our shoulders, but we cannot directly be held accountable or make decisions that affect the nation’s economic and social problems.
